- Make sure that you have an adequate number of working
smoke detector alarms.
- Consider having a residential fire sprinkler system installed.
- Make an escape plan for you family, just in case.
- Review your fire evacuation plan to family members as
well as overnight guests.
- If a fire occurs don't try to save property or possessions,
save your family and yourself and get out of the home.
- Put the proper fire extinguishers and safety equipment
in your home.
- Know how to use it and show other how.
- Do not leave kitchen cooking unattended.
- Don't smoke in bed, don't allow smoking in bedrooms.
- Be cautious when using home heating equipment.
- Keep bedroom doors closed at night. (Don't open a hot
door)
- Avoid overloading electrical outlets and circuits. Keep
an eye out of the electric cord octopus.
- Keep your fireplace and chimney clean and well maintained.
- Do not allow trash to build up in your home or garage.
- Store flammable products in a safe place.
- Inspect your home for possible fire hazards.
- Limit your use of candles, oil lamps and open flame.
- Never leave small children unattended.
- Call 911 for your Fire Department. Call for another house,
be calm and give information clearly.
In the event of a fire teach your children the
following safety steps:
- Get out of the house and call 911
- Don't try to carry or move a fire to another location
- If the fire is small and you are trying to extinguish
it make sure that you have a clear exit
- Extinguish the fire, not just the flames
- Family members are to meet outside in a safe place
- When evacuating stay low, below the smoke and deadly gases
- If your clothing catches on fire, Stop, Drop, and Roll
- Never return to a burning building
